چکیده

In astrophysical situations, e.g. in the interstellar medium (ISM), neutrals can provide viscous damping on scales much larger than the magnetic diffusion scale. Through numerical simulations, we have found that the magnetic field can have a rich structure below the dissipation cutoff scale. This implies that magnetic fields in the ISM can have structures on scales much smaller than parsec scales. Our results show that the magnetic energy contained in a wavenumber band is independent of the wavenumber and magnetic structures are intermittent and extremely anisotropic. We discuss the relation between our results and the formation of the tiny-scale atomic structure (TSAS). Subject headings: ISM:general—ISM:structure—MHD—turbulence

Compressible Mhd Turbulence: Mode Coupling, Anisotropies and Scalings

Compressible turbulence, especially the magnetized version of it, traditionally has a bad reputation with researchers. However, recent progress in theoretical understanding of incompressible MHD as well as that in computational capabilities enabled researchers to obtain scaling relations for compressible MHD turbulence. We discuss scalings of Alfven, fast, and slow modes in both magnetically do...

MHD Turbulence: Scaling Laws and Astrophysical Implications

Turbulence is the most common state of astrophysical flows. In typical astrophysical fluids, turbulence is accompanied by strong magnetic fields, which has a large impact on the dynamics of the turbulent cascade. Recently, there has been a significant breakthrough on the theory of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. For the first time we have a scaling model that is supported by both observat...

Scaling of ISM Turbulence: Implications for HI

Galactic HI is a gas that is coupled to magnetic field because of its fractional ionization. Many properties of HI are affected by turbulence. Recently, there has been a significant breakthrough on the theory of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. For the first time in the history of the subject we have a scaling model that is supported by numerical simulations. We review recent progress in s...

Structure of MHD turbulence in large-Prandtl-number plasmas

In turbulent MHD systems where the ratio of fluid viscosity and magnetic diffusivity (the magnetic Prandtl number, Pr = ν/η) is very large, there exists a broad range of subviscous scales available to magnetic fluctuations, but not to hydrodynamic ones. This MHD regime is encountered, for example, in such astrophysical environments as the interstellar medium and protogalactic plasmas, where Pr ...

1 1 N ov 2 00 3 Magnetic Field Structure and Stochastic Reconnection in a Partially Ionized Gas

We consider stochastic reconnection in a magnetized, partially ionized medium. Stochastic reconnection is a generic effect, due to field line wandering, in which the speed of reconnection is determined by the ability of ejected plasma to diffuse away from the current sheet along magnetic field lines, rather than by the details of current sheet structure. As in earlier work, in which we dealt wi...
